Building: Chelsea Mercantile at 252 Seventh Avenue in Chelsea

Built in 1908 the Chelsea Mercantile was a ‘woolens building’ where fabric was manufactured. Later becoming the Veterens Administration Building’ post World War II, it is now the beautiful and grand prestigious Condominium ‘The Chelsea Mercantile.’

The original buildings, four in total, make up the Mercantile structure on Seventh Avenue, 24th and 25th Street. These buildings originally housed a clothing mail order house for women and men called The National Cloak and Suit Company. Known simply as “The National”, it was the Amazon.com of its day for clothes. Customers would mail in order forms, the garments were then produced by huge on-site sewing machines, packaged on another floor and then shipped out at the loading dock – all under one roof. Upon entering the building, you will note the dramatic early 20th century limestone facade and beautifully appointed Moroccan tile underneath the rotunda.

The building boasts a grand lobby keeping the pre war feeling as you enter engaging rich colors and timely mosaic décor in the terrazzo flooring.
