Building: The Atelier at 33 West 67th Street in Lincoln Square
Known Officially as the Atelier 33 west 67th street is general seen as the bastion of the gothic styles building on the Artists’ Historic District that is 67th Street. Almost all of the buildings in the historic district have limestone bases with dark brick above and 33 is no different ..
The Atelier is faced with brick laid in Flemish bond with random burned headers. The limestone base has a projecting vestibule with extremely ornate Gothic floral ornament that is enlivened by carved human heads, animals, and birds. The top level
resembles a romantic medieval castle gate and is detailed with Gothic pointed arches, panels,
foliate bands, and corbels. Off-course there were a series of great artists who lived/worked inside its walls the most enduring being Dadaist and Surrealist Marcel Duchamp who lived there between 1915 to 1921.
