Building: 39 West 67th Street in Lincoln Square

39 West 67th, completed in 1906, is now part of The West 67th Street Artists’ Colony Historic District which includes eight architecturally significant early twentieth century buildings. They are unified by their brick facades trimmed with limestone and/or terra cotta and neo-gothic design elements. Only 39 West 67th (The Colonial Studios) has restrained Renaissance detail. The original group of investors included the artists Henry Ranger, Frank Dumond, Edward Naegele, Paul Dessa, V.V. Sewell, and Childe Hassam.

The unique interior design and layouts for the apartments were said to be the brainchild of Henry Ranger. The largest apartments had living quarters that faced south, but were built with north facing studios. All of the buildings had a rear extension containing two apartments per floor with ceiling heights higher than the living quarters of the front apartments but not as high as the front apartment studio spaces.
