Discussion about
Owner of walkups here. After 8 years of using CL to find 90% of my tenants I am thinking of switching it up a bit... Do people looking for rentals even look at the listings on this site? Have other owners have success?

of course people look for rentals here, look at all the boards/discussions. we personally use this site religiously (and in fact this year have already been looking for weeks for July move in) - only from your comment i now realize there are probably scores of listings we don't see bc they are on CL... great

CL is a cesspool for looking for rentals. Personally I think nyt is the best.

CL is fine if you look at owner listings, not broker listings. I found my last and current place this way.

Even under broker ones, I have seen real apartments. You just have to know how to filter them. There are MANY apts listed by owner that are [no fee and free month on CL] that are [owner pays fee to broker instead of you getting a free month] on nyt.com. THere are many more that are just on CL and not on NYT.

NYbits takes landlord listings for free or really cheap - and they are all no fee.

So in other words, my current apartment, had I found it on the times, would have been no fee (paid by landlord) but no free month because it was advertised by a broker. The lasing office advertised directly on CL, so I got it no fee no broker AND a free month. you are kind of stupid if you just use nyt in other words.

broker here: last apartment I rented (co-op sublet in FiDi) the customer came in through the Times, with her broker. She was financially qualified and ready to go. CL didn't pull, and neither did SE..

Of course you should check all of the above, which I do. My point is that so many Rockrose, Glenwood, Avalon etc bldgs are advertised as no fee on Nyt by brokers now that those firms will pay fees OR a free month (but never both)...a simple glance at the pictures or floorplan will however alert an avid streeteasy, cl and nybits checker that these bldgs are in fact available with a free month rent without a broker.

Even in the case of condos and coops, I have found listing directly by owner on CL that were also advertised by a broker (which is why so many ads by owner on Cl say specifically "no brokers".)

I am not harping on brokers. Some people don't have time to crazily check all websites.

60% of my rental business(clients) comes through SE v.about 20% through CL. I find the NYT's to be a total waste of money unless I am advertising a open house for an apartment renting above $8000.

SE provides me with educated "real" clients and provides a great interface for quick uploads, changes etc..
My exclusives are listed in OLR and do very well there. 5 rentals closed so far this month, all StreetEasy.

I've found Streeteasy excellent for rentals!

I use all three sources: SE, NYT, and CL. We have seen nice apartments from all sites.

Thanks all, I listed a one bedroom I have for rent on SE and have received a decent number of inquiries from what appears to be quality renters...

Craigslist is useless. I got two months free rent and no broker's fee by going to a management company directly. They were not advertising beyond their own website, although there were a couple of brokers trying to rent it as well, independently.
