Is it true that if I don't officially tell my landlord I am moving out 30 days before the end of my lease, the lease gets automatically renewed at the current rate on a month to month basis?
On some leases--such as ours-- there is a clause that allows the landlord to literally DOUBLE the rent charged if the occupant stays without signing a renewal. You should read the fine print on yours.
What you describe only kicks in if you pay your LL for the month AND the LL accepts the rent. If the LL refuses and you stay in the place, you are a holdover tenant (not good for your team).

Otto's right, though--read thy lease.
