Discussion about
Can anybody recommend good movers (1-bd. to 1-bd.,)? Thank you.
Moishe's...they're great. Not dirt cheap but not too expensive either and they do a great job, don't nickel and dime you after the fact
FlatRate. They're very professional and the number in your quote is exactly what you will pay.
New York Magazine had this to say:
Moving Your Way
718-788-4920 or 212-832-5576 movingyourway.com
Those man-with-a-van offers that litter sidewalks and clutter message boards promise cheap, reliable moving, but they can break your spirit with hidden costs%u2014suddenly there%u2019s a mileage charge?%u2014and surly workers. Not so with Moving Your Way, Igor and Karla Mironov%u2019s twelve-year-old Park Slope moving company. Their crew members are pleasant and punctual, and they move with the urgency and athleticism of Olympic wrestlers%u2014and have even been known to throw in a few extra rolls of tape in a pinch. For larger spaces, the heavily Russian-accented Igor will show up on-site for bids. And the final price is, unbelievably, always the same as the quote. A one-bedroom apartment costs from $260 to move, and larger apartments range from about $430 to $650. The tip is up to you."
We have used Westside Movers a few times. Always pleasant to deal with - not terribly cheap (no chance in the world it would be the crazy low prices quoted in BillyRes' post), but always showed up on time and never broke anything.
Moishe's. I moved from a 1BR to a 2BR, and it cost $1300 moving fee, $300 materials, $200 tip. Yes, expensive, but worth every penny. They delivered packing materials on time, did additional box deliveries on time, showed up the day of the move when scheduled. They swooped in and finished packing the bigger and odd shaped items day of move. They did 2 stops, no problem, at a storage facility to drop off and pick up items. They worked fast, very efficient, didn't break anything, or wreck either building. Nice, kind folks to do business with.
Flatrate. It takes the stress off you, they stick to the quote no matter how long it takes. They are fair and professional.
Flatrate. One of the best service providers I have ever dealt with. Amazing customer service and planning.
Agree on Flatrate. Extremely professional, efficient (they text-messaged me when the truck was on the way - nice touch) and they stick to the pricing they quote.
Flatrate - I also had a great experience. They were on time, professional, stuck to quote and efficient.
i've heard great things about flatrate...a friend moved from NYC to Seattle and the trucks actually were waiting for her (on time!) when she arrived to her new apartment. I read about Divine Moving on citysearch, they sounded good too (anyone else hear anything about them?).
I had a great experience with Flatrate as well. It was around $1,100 (including insurance) for a large 1 bedroom plus tip from central Westchester into Manhattan. They arrived early, were extremely fast, treated my cheap MDF bookshelf as professionally as they treated my inherited antique table, and the price quoted was exactly what I paid. I did the bulk of the packing myself, but they did not charge me extra for packing odd shaped items that they packed themselves. The entire process including travel time took about 3 1/2 hours- not bad even with a flight of stairs on the move out.
I did not have a good experience with FlatRate. You get what you pay for. They did stick to the price they quoted, but they also damaged some of my furniture in the move and didn't return calls - after a while, as they hoped, I guess, I just gave up.
OpenHouser's experience is unfortunate, and I guess I didn't have damage so I don't know how they address that. I did take optional additional insurance. What was great was that they delivered packing materials before the move, sent the right number of people for a complicated job, were completely focused, and had pre-arranged everything with management in the 3 buildings involved. I moved out of one coop, the truck then went to my partner's walk up coop (5 flights!) and moved him out and then moved 1/2 our stuff into a third apartment and the rest was put into their storage facility (very fairly priced). The got it all exactly right, stuck by their bid, and were NICE. It took all the stress I had anticipated out of the move. If you are interested, I used Oscar as foreman and you can specifically request him when you call.

I have used FlatRate twice now and have had great success. They even spent almost 24 hours on my 1st move which involved a trip to Long Island and NYC and the price was still the price. Had a few damaged items and they came thru and paid for the damage. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!
