well i live in the unit now- i have lived in this unit for 3.5 years. the look of the unit itself is unique and charming. however....
- the basement floods every time it rains. the landlord/owner played the blame game on the brownstone next door and refused all my efforts to fix the problem. at my expense, i hired a contractor but the owner stalled and stalled and never corrected it.
- the roof has poor drainage and there has been water damage throughout the apt.
- the upstairs neighbors are very nice, but there are 4 ppl crammed into their unit and you can literally hear every noise they make and every step they take. they are the owners daughters and friends - i begged them to get some sort of carpeting but they refused. good luck sleeping
- the owner will not spend a penny to upkeep the unit or the bldg
- i have had to hire exterminators at my expense and credit it against the rent bc the owner wont
- when the owner does finally bring in contractors, they are unlicensed and do extremely poor quality work
- the security doors locks dont work well and the the doors are so heavy that you will be disrupted all nite long. i asked the owner to install more user friendly doors but he has refused.
- the walls are so thin u can smell every other neighbors cooking
i paid 8k a month so his asking price of 9975 is a joke. i could go on so let me know if anyone wants to hear more
i would like to add a couple more things. the heating system in the basement and the front bedroom is virtually useless. the downstairs security door off the kitchen is a sieve that allows cold air into the unit. again the owner refused all my efforts to get these problems corrected. he just wouldnt spend the money
why did i stay 3 years? well, i was in the midst of a nasty divorce for most of this period and had other priorities. and the owner always promised he would fix these problems but never did.
newbuyer99 - very fair Q. why did i stay? well as i said above, i was in a war of the roses, my kids are grown and i work 3 blocks from the apt. the owner and i at first were somewhat friends, we played golf, went on a few casino road trips, etc, so i never expected it to end up like it did.
anyone interested in this rental should stay as far away from this apt as possible
Could you be more specific?
The area is lovely; what's wrong with the unit?

Very helpful to know, thanks for all the color. My only question - with all these problems, why did you stay so long?
