Seems like everyone here is wondering how to make money and or when to buy. Listen, there's not going to be any bargains until 2010 at best. And that's if your lucky! We'll see plenty of bear market rallies, but those making money will buy real assets (oil and agriculture, or short sell). New York real estate prices have alot further to fall! What i am doing is short selling the broad market. Started with homebuilders, then onto investment banks, commercial banks, commercial real estate, consumer services, and then my last plan will be the dollar. you can buy puts and or just short sell these financial institutions. Over the next year short sellers will make a lot of money, enough to buy a penthouse in Manhattans skyline when it's all said and done. What i do is short sell the ETF's, and then after my profit i immediately take 50% of my profit and sell the u.s. dollar for Swiss Francs and Japanese Yen. Would i buy NY real estate? not in a million years. This city is on it's way to being not the "party", but part of the "party" as far as financial centers. Sure i'll buy a condo in NY, a 1 BR, luxury building for 250K..Great place to come visit, but the days of working in NY financial industry are numbered. At least for the next decade. [less]
Great idea. All you short sellers make a killing shorting VOW, LVS, MGM, etc.... have fun looking for your $250K 1 bed in Riverdale.
nba - what do you have against short selling -- it is just a mechanism of investing in a direction of the market.
You don't have to agree -- or perhaps you are just licking your wounds from being long in a bear market?
PS -- when the market reverses you can invest long, too. You are not trapped in a direction.
No one likes the person betting don't pass at the craps table.
The one bet that has never worked out is betting against the USA. We always prevail. That being said, until this is done, shorting the rallies has been working and should continue - until it doesn't - and that time may come soon. Best way to play it is buying the ultra shorts.
I am making more money this year than I have in the past 5 years. I also just gave a raise to all of my employees.
Petrfitz....what is it you do and can I come work for you....
i create software and media for the educational childrens content market.
I'm always long, and I *welcome* shortsell_king's comments. The end of any trend, be it tech stocks, real estate, or shorting in a bear market, is always marked by people claiming *everybody* can make money in this market! (Hardly: a short is a zero-sum game. For everyone who bets correctly on a short, there's someone else who bet wrongly).
curiously, don't listen to petrfitz. He knows embarrassingly little about software. Search the archives from a few weeks ago and you'll see where he shows his ignorance on the subject. He's a broker shill who pretends to make millions in many industries, but primarily real estate. Others have exposed his other fantasies too.
tech-guy - I know more about software than you ever will.
You never told us what you "program". It is obvious that you are a back office code monkey - probably java - and are not even aware of the business implications of the code that you are working on.
Please explain to us why you are a brilliant technologist that has the ability to knock me who has built and sold successful platforms in WAP, J2ME, flash, flash video, etc etc etc.
You wont answer you will just attack me which is a sign of your bullshit.
Oh yeah - I need the paper changed in my printer.
Shorting is great except when you're caught on the wrong side! Look at the above mentioned highly popular shorts over the last week. In each case everyone who was short was caught having to cover b/c the prices rallied.
My point is that you could make money shorting but you can also make money going long.
tech_guy get over here fast I need my monitor cleaned!
i hear the video gaming market is also hot and hiring lots of techies these days
curiously - not really in the US but the Canadian video game and virtual world market is totally hot.
Going long is the better bet in the long run (no pun intended). Its actually a positive sum game, vs the negative sum game that is shorting (due to fees). Shorting requires you to time the market correctly, which I certainly can't do and don't believe anyone who isn't a full-time trader can do (and even most of them can't, either).
That said, I'm glad some people short. It does keep prices more accurate. It means passive, index investors like me are buying and selling at more realistic prices. We're piggybacking, for free, on your price adjustments. So, thank you! But that's towards the smart shorts - the blanket "everybody can make money! short everything!" people are just creating a new bubble, but this time downwards.
petrfitz: We've had this discussion already, and I'm not going to play your game of starting over so you can try to convince me again. My last statement was to curiously, not to you. As I've told you many times in the past, I couldn't *possibly* care less whether you believe me.
ha ha tech_guy = code monkey pretending to be a front office guy!
now get back to your data entry!
shorting home builders, financials... i've done it. it was lovely while it lasted. shortsell_king you seem to be at least a year late!
shortsell_king, agree 100% with you in not buying anything until 2010, even 2012 i'm afraid.
and (this is for me) maintenance costs are crazy. how are people that pay more than $3k/month in maintenance feel they own the place? maybe a brownstone is for me, as long as they keep on getting a great deal in terms of property taxes (which could change).
The thread that made petrfitz hide from this board in shame for several weeks. Search for "tech_guy" to see the conversation I alluded to earlier:
http://www.streeteasy.com/nyc/talk/discussion/4938-crains-huge-job-cuts-on-wall-street-forecast
Bonus: Try to guess which other poster is petrfitz's alternate name that he uses to agree with himself. He has a few of those, I hear.
tech_guy wow you can search my previous posts but you cannot rebutt or counter any point or topic i have on technology.
What is your point? that you are a bitter back office code monkey?
Hah, you think anything you said in this thread qualifies as a "point or topic" on technology? That's incredibly sad. You name-dropped 3 technologies, one of which was flash. Are you really so pathetic that you think name-dropping technologies is impressive? Is a "point"?
What's my point? It should be obvious - you use this pathetic fantasy to insult anyone who disagrees with your broker-shill BS. Its sad and pathetic, and thats why I enjoy exposing you and ridiculing you any chance I get.
tech_guy will you please put paper in printer #3???? I have opened up a ticket and you have not responded!
tech_guy = Nick Burns http://www.hulu.com/watch/19050/saturday-night-live-nick-burns
I love it - I rip apart your ideas in that thread, embarrass you horribly, and the best you can come up with is "put the paper in printer #3". Humoring you, lets say its true that I don't code, I just replace paper and clean monitors. Wouldn't that make it even *more* pathetic that I can rip apart this fantasy of yours so badly? I mean, you spent time *researching* this crap, and I could casually tear it apart in my free time.
please cite where you "ripped apart my ideas"
you mean when you argued that computer code cant violate copyright?
are you going to be that dumb again?
Reread the thread :) I stand by the original - you're the one trying to rewrite it here.
too funny. Back office code monkeys whose code never gets ditributed commercially thinks that there are no copyright or trademark issues. that means you write code that goes no where and stays in the back office!
too funny.
I like how you subtly add copyright into the mix. You didn't mention that the first time (thread linked above for proof), when more people than just me laughed at you for thinking software code has trademark issues. Besides, this is all about your stupid fantasy - if you want to think I'm a bum off the street borrowing a library computer to post here, I couldn't possibly care less.
All I'm here to do is prove that you're too stupid to come up with a fantasy that makes sense :)
from now on all my posts will end with:
Approved by Tech_guy!
its funny Ihave about 30 code monkeys like you who work for me. And they are always displaying their ignorance of business by saying idiot things like you. Ahh theres no issue with trademark infringement on code that is distributed to 1000's of peoples machines....
This post approved by Tech_Guy - the idiotic code monkey!
You aren't even smart enough to learn... tsk tsk... I made fun of you earlier for bragging about 1000 users. Shouldn't your fantasy change to millions of users by now?
I also told you how real businesses obfuscate the code clients see. Ask one of your code monkeys to explain what that means to you. Tell them to use really, really small words.
so you5r argument that code cant infringe trademarks is that companies obfuscate their code? Your actual argument is that becuase companies protect their code that there is no way code can legally infringe a trademark?
What a dumb ass.
This post approved by tech_guy
do you that same brilliant logic when you are writing your back office data export queries?
Companies don't obfuscate to protect against trademark infringements. They obfuscate so users can't reverse engineer the code (ask one of your monkeys to explain "reverse engineer" to you). The fact that you still don't understand a simple, textbook, commonplace industry standard shows that you're not part of the industry at all.
I can't believe I missed this the first time:
"You never told us what you "program". It is obvious that you are a back office code monkey - probably java [...] Please explain to us why you are a brilliant technologist that has the ability to knock me who has built and sold successful platforms in WAP, J2ME, flash, flash video, etc etc etc."
What do you think the "J" in "J2ME" stands for? You know SO LITTLE about software that you insult me for writing Java at the same time that you brag about writing Java!
petrfitz...got PWONED...fitzy - you never disappoint...
code monkey are you saying that Java and J2ME are the same?
I knew you were a JAVA back office code monkey! You finally admitted it above.
It is so funny watching you argue above your head.
This post was approved by tech_guy - the worlds most clueless code monkey!
Oberon - how did I get owned? please explain Oh King of the Fairies....... your name fitz you add no value just attacks and no knowledge of what you are talking about.
Wow, troll-on-troll action!
I said in the other thread that I code in C++. I never said Java and J2ME were the same - I simply said nobody who knows anything about software would be so stupid as to insult one while bragging about the other.
so you are saying that JAva and J2ME are the same? Why is it bad to bag on a monkey who writes JAVA back ofice boring ass internal applications when you have been a hot shot media mogul who created killer mobile device applications in J2ME? please explain your logic?
Glad to see that you are proud of being a middle-level language programmer. Do you specialize in exciting projects like printer device drivers or server side apps?
#include // provides std::cout
int main()
{
std::cout << "This code is approved by Pepsi Cola and Tech_guy the dumb ass code monkey!\n";
return 0;
}
#include must be followed by a filename to... include. Not a comment. The code you copy/pasted and tried to modify now doesn't compile - why do you still bother? You're just digging yourself deeper, deeper, deeper.
Let me give you a hint. Here's the flow chart (common joke in my industry) of where programming languages live, in terms of prestige.
http://blogs.msdn.com/steverowe/archive/2007/03/14/programming-language-hierarchy.aspx
See where C++ is? See where Java is? Where's J2ME? Oh yeah, its part of the Java family (same language, different libraries/compiler). Where's flash? Its part of the HTML bubble - you'll be amused to see that. Didn't you bring up HTML code in the other thread? Yes, yes you did.
hee hee sorry I got the C++ wrong but I am not a code monkey.
Its hilarious that you are still trying to say that back office Java develoeprs are the same as mobile device content developers.
code monkey approved!
We've run this into the ground :) As much fun as it was, I know you'll never admit defeat. Best I could hope for is you switching names and pretending this embarrassment wasn't really you (Your_Landlord hasn't made an appearance in a while). Until that day, I'll keep this thread bookmarked to bring up next time you make stupid claims. Hopefully by then you'll be smart enough to look up the acronyms you name drop!
code monkey go write a printer driver. man your career is so exciting and gives you such insight into the world of RE and big business.
Its clear to everyone how much more I know than you. If you *really* believe that's all I do, its more of a reflection on you than me.
lets review how much tech_guy knows:
1 - tech guy states that there are no legal trademark infringement issues with computer code that may be distributed on 1000's of peoples machines.
2 - tech guy states that because some companies protect their code from being decompiled that there is no legal trademark infringements.
3 - tech guy states that a person who programs printer driver software in JAVA is the same as a person who creates video game content for mobile phones.
4 - being a back office code monkey gives Tech_guy the experience and knowledge to become a RE mogul even though he owns no real estate.
This post was approved by tech_guy and he agrees with all the above information.
All I see is two guys who bet the complete wrong way on Manhattan RE talking about BS on a real estate board. Neither of you should be trying to put yourself above anyone...
I own my apartment, actually. I leave it to the readers to judge the accuracy of the rest.
nyc10022: at least neither of us are deluded enough to think "a few crazies" on the streeteasy boards can actually change the RE market, like you believe... ok, scratch that, at least 1 of us doesn't believe that! petrfitz is a broker-shill, after all. Exactly the same as you, just pushing the opposite side with equal disregard for the truth.
Didn't you say you were ignoring me? What's wrong, too scared what I say may sway the market positive? Hilarious that you think whats said here can change the market.
I'm heading home. Happy Halloween! petr, try dressing up as one of your fantasies. nyc, try dressing up as someone who could afford real estate in today's market :)
petrfitz, thought you'd be interested in this (from today's WSJ):
"Among stocks to watch on Friday, videogame maker Electronics Arts tumbled more than 17% after it posted a wider loss and reduced its annual forecast. "Sizeable increases in product development expenses cycle-to-cycle have not been offset by relative increases in unit/title productivity," said Deutsche Bank analysts, which reiterated a "sell" rating and cut its price target to $19 from $26."
bjw - i know all about EA - whats your point?
Don't you worry, EA and petrfitz's fake company are in entirely different leagues. EA makes real games in C . petrfitz's fake company makes those crappy word-teaser games you get on Yahoo Games. Except Yahoo Games has millions of users, and petrfitz brags about having thousands.
I can practically *see* petrfitz desperately googling to see if EA really does use C for their games, as he kicks himself for yet again bashing something that's superior to what he *pretends* to be.
If EA, with their amazingly fun games, is hurting in this market, you know what that says about petrfitz's crappy game company... right, it doesn't actually exist, so he wouldn't know.
Why does streeteasy turn C-plus-plus into just C? Weird. Testing: C++ C++ c++ c++
> nyc10022: at least neither of us are deluded enough to think "a few crazies" on the streeteasy boards
> can actually change the RE market, like you believe
OK, I think you're just retarded now (my apologies to retarded people). In that thread I noted that 70 THOUSAND people visit streeteasy each month, and there are numerous other boards like it. Yes, that can absolutely sway a market.
> What's wrong, too scared what I say may sway the market positive?
No, your nonsense is just too amusing to miss.
> nyc, try dressing up as someone who could afford real estate in today's market :)
Yes, someday I hope to lose most of my money so I can only afford your outer-borough apartment.
Have you got nothing left other than insults?
I tried to be cordial with you. Then you told me that you don't care what my purchase price is, you *know* I lost money, and exactly what percentage that was. If you don't care to listen to facts, insults are all you deserve.
> If you don't care to listen to facts
Ironic... given you are just completely making things up. Pretty much everything you accused me of here, you made up. Half of the stuff coming out of your mouth is bad market data you made up, and the other half is telling folks what they said when they didn't. I see you and pete going back and forth with more stupidity as well.
Then you tell me what I "deserve".
Interesting. Sorry, but you are wrong, and you are a hypocrite.
I guess insults are all you have left... I feel bad that you made a bad "investment" decision, but trying to insult others won't fix that.
> I tried to be cordial with you.
And thats the funniest part about it all.... no you didn't. Another lie. You were quick to insult, and quick to lie.
The boards are open for anyone to search, to see the interaction between you and me. Maybe you should give yourself a refresher. While you're at it, link for me any post where I made up market data. Never happened.
> The boards are open for anyone to search, to see the interaction between you and me.
Or anyone can just look above... playing victim really 'aint gonna work on this thread.
> Never happened.
I notice you didn't deny lying about what I said.... interesting. I guess you're accepting that one.
I misattributed a prediction to you. It was from someone with a similar screen name who sounds a lot like you. I'm sorry about that. You are making an awfully big deal about an offhand comment I made once and haven't repeated since.
tech_guy, why are you letting yourself be baited? You've had intelligent things to say on other threads (some I agree with, others I disagree with, which is normal). Petrfitz is a complete joke that no one on these boards takes seriously. Why sink to his level?
its a mutha f*uckin walkoff!
Baited? I instigated this fight! I'm baiting him to further show his stupidity :) Why? Because its fun.
