Discussion about
Hi all, I am a first time buyer in ny and I am wondering if you guys have any recommendations for attorneys. I am not from the US so someone who has experience with international buyers will be great. Any input will be appreciate. Thanks!
I used Paul Wolsk (http://www.wolsklaw.com/), very nice guy who does only real estate deals.
A few friends have used him since and have been very happy with his advice and guidance when buying coop/condos.
I was a StreetEasy addict (and still am) when I was coop hunting. I used a great attorney, Kevin Farrelly ((212) 684-8700). He did an excellent job ‘holding my hand’ and walking me through the entire process, and also help me weed through all of the ‘broker babble’ and misinformation. I would recommend him without hesitation.
When you buy your place, I also found an excellent painter that was also very reasonable.
Good luck--
Three quick points if you're a foreign national:
1) many co-ops will be off the table, so be sure to ask the brokers which ones;
2) get preapproved for your financing and make sure you understand the rates, because it's no fun as a seller to have a foreign buyer think they're going to pay 5% and then have them find out they're going to pay 10% in terms of interest rate;
3) have your attorney go over FIRPTA with you.
Other than the process is the same.

rogermintz, right, Kevin's great. Does estate stuff, too.
Frontporch, if you live/work in this country, coops are not automatically out. I am now in my fourth coop and we never had any problems (both my husband and I are foreign).
Front Porch.....excuse the ignorance, does 'off the table' mean not advertised?
What is FIRPTA?

I used Michael Strauss and he was great. (212) 319-1500
